How Posterous could be the next Friendfeed

This is what Posterous already have in common with Friendfeed:

    - Following/Followers (called subscriptions)
    - Likes (called Favorite)
    - Home stream (all subscriptions in one stream)
    - Excellent Comment system (almost identical with better Twitter support! Even Facebook support...)
    - Bookmarklet
    - Excellent email system both for sending & recieving
    - Brilliant developers!

Here is what they need to do to get more like Friendfeed:
    - Better profile page (maybe separate the sidebar from it?)
    - Move out links to all the important pages to the sidebar. For example a link to all our favorites, discussions, all subscriptions etc.
    - Maybe make the "All subscriptions" page real-time and interactive?
    - Make tags like friendfeed groups. You can already see what everybody else is posting for a specific tag. Push that even further and make that one of the main things.

Can anyone think of something else? Please post that in the comments. Just like you do on friendfeed :)

Subscribe to my Posterous (http://posterous.com/people/f99VIVIGS ), I will use it a lot now when Facebook bought Friendfeed...

Posterous also needs to improve the bookmarklet quite a bit. First thing would be more posting options, not just post everywhere and post only to Posterous.

@simplygrey Yeah, they must add a feauture to the bookmarklet so we can choose which service to post to

FriendFeed is (was?) a great way to get activity fm various sources into Twitter. Posterous might not be suited to that kind of thing.

You'll be able to do this yourself once theming is available. I agree with Grey; we should be able to post to single services (and not just Posterous) from the bookmarklet. But as to your major point, I don't really view Posterous as a sort of Friendfeed, but more like a better and more social sort of Tumblr (or any other social microblog). If we want it to be like Friendfeed, the first thing would be to turn Posterous into an aggregator, which it currently isn't.

No maybe not. Yet. Posterous could add such features easily though. You can also do that automatically via Gmail if you want though. If you get your posts from other sources into your Gmail you could create a filter that posts it to your Posterous.

I don't say that is a good thing to do, but it's possible. Would be better with a developed Posterous feature for it though.

Yeah, Posterous is not real-time but maybe They will add that feature? At least for the comment system?

Not directly but you can with different services get your feeds into your gmail and there create a filter that post it automatically to your Posterous. Not ideal but it works.

But I hope it's a very simple theming system for only changing Colors and such, because if it's not it will probably end up as another tumblr site. I think the simplicity with Posterous (and friendfeed) is the beauty of the service.

What I can see from commenting a lot on Posterous now, is that the most important change they must do is to make the commenting system realtime as it is on friendfeed. It's frustrating to hit refresh all the time to see if there are new comments.

Thank you all for has "favorited" this post! That makes me think of one more thing Posterous needs to do. They need to get a "Best of Posterous" page just like friendfeed :) That way we can see whats popular right now and what has been most popular of the day.

It was thanks to FriendFeed I found Posterous ... I believe almost the first day they were released.

«Real time» had not been around too long in FF, had it?! Maybe I've been away from there longer than I though as everyone here seem to be so accustomed to it..

One thing that Posterous has that Friendfeed don't have, is Custom Domains. I'm using it on my Posterous as you can see: http://pingmicro.com/

Yeah.. me too! Even THAT part is so much easier to set up! [when you want to set your domain to Posterous, that is].

I used to have a Wordpress for a while there, but finally it felt too cumbersome for my li'l «needs»

I've read the article about FF/FB now...it feels kind of sad though..

Posterous doesn't need to be the "next" anything per se. Just keep simplifying the experience with inclusion of features that make posting and posting specific content easier. This isn't a feed receptacle. Let's not try and think it is the next FF.

Improved profiles/sidebar would help to promote content and allow us to present "favorite" content...from us (recent or "best" posts) and from people we follow.

Sometimes I think I want to have more theme options. A lot of the time I love the simplicity...but want better ways to display and share content more than I want themes. That is about customization...choice.

The Posterous team has been doing a great job focusing on making the user (us) experience better. That in itself is key to inspiring me (you?) to use it more.

A lot of what is being "asked for" in this comment string is what is already offered by lots of other services. Fine...some of those things are cool. Let's just keep focusing on improving the uniqueness as new/familiar features are added.

JS-Kit comments type stuff would be great.

Keep adding the cool & unique first...the me too stuff a distance second.

Nice to see a string of passionate users here.

Posterous fulfils only part of the FriendFeed flow. You'll probably have to use it in combo with Google Reader, since Posterous doesn't seem to support RSS.
    Aug 11, 2009
    Svartling said...
Judd: Thank you for your great comment! Yes you are right that Posterous don't need to be the "Next something" but why don't implement some of those features that is unique at friendfeed too? That could make Posterous the "Next big thing" at least. But add the cool and unique first just like you said.
    Aug 11, 2009
    Grey Drane said...
Yeah, I agree. I think that until the statstream becomes "federated" into a universal, open standard there will always be a need for a FriendFeed-like service that aggregates and distributes your activity on all of your various social services.

What Posterous does well is the posting and conversation aspect, and this is the part of FriendFeed that it could replace IMO.

Another idea have is that on our Posterous profile pages we have the title of our latest posts, favorites and such. What if Posterous makes a page that shows all subscriptions posts like that & when we click on the title it unveils a short quote if its a text post, link if its a link, photo if its a photo etc. They could also make it interactive so we could favorite and comment directly from this view? Wouldnt that be cool and useful?

I've started to use the Posterous page My Subscriptions page ( http://posterous.com/reader ) more frequently. I think it works ok for finding posts to "Favorite" (like) almost as I did on friendfeed. Also I think that is a good way to get some Google Juice to our Profiles, because the links are not using "NoFollow". Try it for your self, you will be surprised how many good posts you will find :) Another ting, here is a great list if you want to find great Posterous users: http://friendfeed.com/question-of-the-day/7a7d8887/what-is-your-posterous-profile-blog-url-mine
